Hello! March is almost upon us!
In March we’ll be reading a short story called The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper is a feminist classic about a woman who is driven to madness due to a ‘rest cure’—a popular treatment for hysteria at the time.
Fun fact: Virginia Woolf has also famously written about the rest cure.
In The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman breaks down the stigmas surrounding mental illnesses and postpartum depression, just as she did in real life. Gilman was not just an author but also a lecturer, sociologist, activist, and publisher. She founded and produced her own magazine called The Forerunner, which was in print from 1909-1916.
We wonder what thoughts will spring up from your beautiful minds after reading this feminist gothic tale…
With love,
